Streszczenie:
Socioeconomic status (SES) is traditionally measured by variables such as income or educational degree. Studies have shown that subjective SES, is a construct separate from objective SES and important from the perspective of health or stress experienced by a person.
People’s convictions about their own current social position and anticipated one turn out to have a predictive value in terms of one’s health and well-being. Therefore, there is a need for a tool measuring the person’s uncertainty about his future socioeconomic status -anticipation of social position in the upcoming years. The aim of the study was to investigate validity and reliability of our original questionnaire for measuring a socioeconomic uncertainty (15 items for status immediately after graduation and 15 items for 5 years after graduation). Participants filled “paper and pencil” questionnaires. In addition correlations between socioeconomic uncertainty and indicators of objective socioeconomic status (father’s and mother’s education, wealth and earnings), early life socioeconomic indicator and subjective socioeconomic status (MacArthur Ladder for subjective socioeconomic measure), along with valid and reliable measures of psychosocial functioning, including health and well-being were calculated. Results show that our tool is valid for measuring social status uncertainty. More research is needed regarding relationship of socioeconomic uncertainty and other variables.
